France Implements Ban on Fireworks
France has introduced a ban on the purchase, possession, and transportation of fireworks for the upcoming Bastille Day celebrations. The government issued a decree to prohibit the use of "pyrotechnic articles" during the national day festivities on 14 July.
Ban Introduced in Response to Riots
The ban was enacted as a response to recent rioting that occurred following the police killing of Nahel M, a 17-year-old, in Nanterre. These riots involved the use of fireworks as weapons and were accompanied by some of the most severe urban violence witnessed in France in nearly two decades.
Exceptions for Official Firework Displays
The ban does not apply to official fireworks displays organized by local authorities. These authorized events are exempt from the prohibition.
Measures to Ensure Public Safety
To maintain order and protect the French population during the two-day celebration, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne announced the deployment of a significant security presence. This measure aims to prevent any potential violence or disturbances that may arise during the national holiday.
Concerns Surrounding Public Safety
Prime Minister Borne expressed the concerns of many citizens regarding the possibility of further violent incidents during the national holiday. The heightened security measures and the ban on fireworks aim to address these concerns and ensure the safety of the French people.
By implementing this ban, France aims to prevent the risk of serious public disturbances and maintain peace and order during the Bastille Day festivities.
