Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH) leads the way in healthcare sustainability by introducing Universal Meals as part of its Climate Pledge. With a goal to significantly reduce carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve zero emissions by 2050, SCVH prioritizes the interplay between health, dietary choices, and the environment.
What are Universal Meals? These plant-based meals are free from animal ingredients and the top nine allergens, ensuring they are inclusive and safe for individuals with dietary restrictions. Not only do Universal Meals accommodate diverse needs, but they also contribute to faster patient recovery.
Supported by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Universal Meals aim to promote health equity by making nutritious and sustainable food options accessible to all. The endorsement aligns with recommendations from esteemed medical organizations like the American Medical Association and the American College of Cardiology, both of which advocate for plant-based meal options in hospitals.
Inspired by SCVH, other healthcare institutions such as Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and Emory University Hospital in Atlanta have embraced Universal Meals, signaling a positive trend towards offering healthy, sustainable, and inclusive food choices within healthcare settings.
