James White was banned from attending football matches for four years
A Manchester United fan, James White, was banned from attending football matches for four years and fined £1,000 after he wore a football shirt with offensive references to the Hillsborough disaster to the FA Cup final. The shirt had the number 97 with the words "not enough" written above it, mocking the tragedy where 97 football fans died in 1989.
White was arrested at Wembley Stadium after a photo of him wearing the shirt was shared on social media. He smiled when he was informed of the sentence. Manchester United also banned him indefinitely.
The club and the FA strongly condemned his actions, and the CPS vowed to bring people who engage in such behavior to justice. In addition to White's case, 22 other individuals were arrested for various offenses during the policing operation at Wembley. The police are still investigating an item that was thrown onto the pitch after the Manchester United goal.
